FIELD TRIP EXTENSIONS: OTHER OPTIONS

Are you interested in “migrating” to another Cable site before or after visiting
the Cable Natural History Museum? Consider making your trip to Cable an
entire day and visit another selected field trip location.

Forest Lodge Nature Trail:
Take a hike with your students! The Forest Lodge Nature Trail is located about
9 miles east of Cable on Garmisch Road off of County Hwy. M. The trail offers
you and your students a 1 ½ mile loop that will lead you through forests, bogs,
and an experimental prairie. Along the trail there are superb examples of many
unique natural features of the northwoods, including glacial erratics, old-growth
white pine trees, carnivorous bog-dwelling pitcher plants, and a wide variety of
wildflowers, birds, and other wildlife. Free interpretive booklets and maps are
available, and will provide you and your students with more information about these natural areas. As you walk the trails in a clockwise direction, each numbered section in this booklet corresponds to a numbered post along the trail. Feel free to explore on and off the path using as many of your senses as you can to discover new information about the forest flora and fauna. Approximate Hiking Time: 1 hour.

The Cable Natural History Museum established the Forest Lodge Nature Trail in 1968. In 1999, the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest acquired the property as a generous gift from Mary Griggs Burke. Currently, the Museum and the Forest Service share the goals of education, research, and interpretive opportunities for the public and work together to preserve and manage the Forest Lodge Nature Trail.
