CABLE NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM AWARDED XCEL ENERGY GRANT
The Cable Natural History Museum
was recently awarded a $1,000 grant from Xcel
Energy/Northern States Power for development of a major display
about insects.
The exhibit, titled "Planet of the Insects," will
explore the biology, behavior and natural history of insects,
especially those that live in the north woods region. In terms
of number of species, distribution and total biomass, insects
are by far the most dominant group of animals on Earth.
This exhibit will introduce visitors to the incredible diversity
of insects; highlight the ways ecosystem health and human activities
such as agricultural production and medicine benefit from insect
activity; and examine the dangers posed by some insects. The
exhibit will feature live and preserved insect specimens, fossils
and models of insects and their habitats, photographs, drawings,
videos and hands-on activities for Museum visitors.
The Northern States Power Company’s
Charitable Contributions program supports and enhances education,
civic, cultural, health and community services that affect
the quality of life in the communities the company serves.
"Planet of the Insects" will
open at the Cable Natural History Museum on May 26, 2001 and
run through May 2002. For further information, contact the
Museum at (715) 798-3890 or e-mail: email@cablemuseum.org.
